Despite being a callous individual generally, the recent death of a respected colleague and friend has made me ponder my attitude. John Scott was perhaps considered a gruff individual - until you penetrated that exterior and discovered a warm, amusing and intelligent person.
When I was asked to enter a different department, my only condition was the John should be the one to train me – as I considered him to be thorough and exact. This was arguably due to his naval career, where if he were on the USS Enterprise, he would shame the chief engineer with his knowledge and expertise on achieving maximum warp speed. On visiting his home after a fairly recent bout of illness, he still had his naval cap on view and a receiver -that may have been pilfered from a ship it was so good – listening to his beloved Radio Devon.
My thoughts reach out to John’s wife Kath – who has suffered more personal misfortune than is understandable lately – whom I know that John totally adored.
