To keep up with the latest technology, Microsoft released a wireless adaptor for the Xbox 360 that conforms to the 802.11n standard. Quite simply this latest standard offers an improved bit transfer rate of data from device to device. For example, the older adaptor offers a theoretical transfer rate of 54 Mbps compared to the newer theoretical rate of about 600 Mbps. The actual throughput will be much lower due to network overheads. Before you rush out and buy one thinking your connection will be faster, there are other points to consider.
Although this new adaptor is backwards compatible with older standards (meaning it will work with your current router), you will not see the higher transfer rates unless you have a wireless ‘N’ router. Don’t be too dismayed though! You may find that using this adaptor increases both your signal range and strength. This is due to its use of multiple-input and multiple-output or MIMO technology (search yourself for explanation).
If you absolutely must have a wireless connection for your 360, this should be at the top of your ‘must-have’ list…despite its horrendous price tag.
