When I recently suffered with ‘man-flu‘ there was an opportunity to read (other than educational material) through some books. My choices were:
- The Absolute Truth by David Baldacci – This is mainly to do with perception management, which is especially relevant in our interconnected world! It begins with a fake website and illustrates how emotions can be stirred and how global tensions can escalate rapidly. It reminds me of a quote “A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.” Which just happens to be a favourite of Terry Pratchett.
- Unseen Academicals by Terry Pratchett – As always it’s extremely humourous with a hidden depth. As SFX stated “We doubt whether Pratchett gives a fig about 22 men kicking a bag of wind, but he’s ever fascinated by people, our vagaries, our vanities and our triumphs [...].” Better than any real-life sporting tittle-tattle!
- The Stone Monkey by Jeffery Deaver – It’s the usual blend of pace, in-depth characters with a few twists and turns. This novel broaches the subject of Snakeheads and the human trafficking from China.
If you’ve never read any of the above authors work, give one of them a try.
